![]() ![]() The fun little twist is the contrast between the attack and the demise when you finish off a zombie, they will burst in to cutesy things such as rainbows, pink hearts, and stars. This delivers devastating attacks that will completely eradicate and decimate your enemies. Your acrobatic cheerleading skills come in handy during combat, but the chainsaw is your main weapon. Swan is an evil goth sorcerer hell bent on taking over the world, starting with San Romero high school.Ĭrack out the chainsaw, because this game requires all the dismemberment, blood, guts, and gore that you can give it. This outbreak is caused by a formerly quiet classmate of hers called Swan, and as of now he is your arch nemesis. Her deep, dark secret? She is a zombie hunter sworn to destroy the undead her family has been fighting zombies for generations, so when Juliet turns up to school to find it in the middle of a zombie outbreak, she doesn't even blink an eye. You play as our protagonist Juliet Starling, a perky and upbeat eighteen year old cheerleader at her high school San Romero in California. Come for the party, stay for the zombies, this is Lollipop Chainsaw. This elaborate game has everything you could ever ask for: blood, gore, and a zombie slaying cheerleader. I ran through this area opening doors to move forward and bouncing off zombie heads (a QTE mini-game).Lollipop Chainsaw is the sickly sweet hack and slash game brought to you by Suda 51, and is the result of expertly combining the grotesque with the comical. Moving between these is the key to dodging bullets. While it wasnt obvious, the Elevator Action area has a foreground and background. I went up an elevator and ran into a pixilated cowboy that fired bullets at Juliet. Nick makes a joke saying that he wouldnt mind doing some side-scrolling with Juliet. Other items in the shop include MP3s (not actual MP3s, but songs for use in game) and concept art.Ĭompleting this area brought me into another video game, one inspired by Elevator Action. I spent these at a nearby shop to buy a new attack for Juliet and a couple of lollipops to restore health. (I guess I shouldnt have horded all of those coins ) I managed to save the guy who rewarded Juliet with more coins. I dispatched the zombies, but couldnt get to the girl in time. I raced up rafters to rescue a girl hanging onto a ledge for her life and a guy surrounded by zombies. Back in the arcade, there were more zombies to dice up and survivors to save. Lollipop Chainsaw switched back into a zombie slasher after completing the level. When I was spotted, the yellow sphere turned red and angrily chased Juliet. I had to grab eight keys without alarming the giant yellow head. This mini-game had Juliet run around a maze as a sphere-shaped yellow monster with dog ears and fez tried to gobble her up. Were not sure what exactly led up to Juliet and the gang needing to rescue her sister, but were looking forward to seeing what happens next in the bizarre tale.Īfter slicing through three zombies, Juliet was digitized into Suda 51′s take on Pac-Man. The altercation concluded with Juliet and her father teaming up to cleave the funkmasters starship in half while rescuing Rosalind. I loved gunning down Joseys spaceship while dodging the 8-bit bombs being tossed towards me. Fortunately, gunplay in Lollipop Chainsaw feels just as reliable as in Shadows of the Damned. The keytar-wielding superstar flies a UFO around a circular arena while players take pot shots with the chainsaw blaster. I faced off with Josey, a funky, neon pink hybrid of Baron Samedi and Bootsy Collins. One of Shadows of the Damneds highlights was easily its boss fights, and the same goes for Lollipop Chainsaw. So was sawing through one of the Pac-man wannabes from the inside out after being swallowed alive. Securing keys while avoiding the ravenous, pixelated predators was a good time. I trekked through Suda 51 versions of Pac-man and Elevator Action during my time with the game. Juliet is sucked into a video game during her stint in the arcade. The slicing and dicing was also mixed up with some retro gameplay. In one instance, I executed timed button prompts to team up with Juliet for a high-flying cheerleader trick to launch the heroine to a high platform. Several times I took on the role of Juliets decapitated boyfriend, Nick, as his noggin was placed on a hapless corpse and piloted through some unique scenarios. ![]() Juliets flashy acrobatics and short-skirted antics are mixed up with some quicktime events as well. ![]() I dug sawing zombified video game nerds in half with the push of a few buttons. Sure, you can methodically time swipes of the chainsaw, but blindly brandishing the candy-coated power tool is just as effective. Lollipop Chainsaw is a fairly button-mashy excursion. Kicking ass in the arcade felt natural and fun. ![]()
